For parents and teachers
DubbleDef Kids is a free daily word game for grades 1–5. Each clue gives two meanings, and the player finds the one word that fits both: a bat that flies and a bat that hits, or flour for baking and a flower in the garden.
How it builds vocabulary
- Words with more than one meaning (homographs) and sound-alike words (homophones) are core reading and spelling skills in the early grades.
- After every clue, the answer is shown in two example sentences, one for each meaning, so a missed word is still a word learned.
- Read to me: a 🔊 button reads the clues and sentences aloud (in browsers with a built-in voice), so early readers can play on their own.
- Gentle hints: first the starting letter and length, then three words to choose from. Nobody gets stuck.
- For grades 1–2, a small spelling slip on a longer word is accepted, and the right spelling is shown.
Two levels, every day
Grades 1–2 get three clues a day with everyday words. Grades 3–5 get five, with school words and less common meanings. Everyone gets the same words each day; new words arrive at midnight Eastern time. Words come back around now and then for review.
In the classroom
It makes a quick warm-up: put the day's clues on the board, let the class guess, then read the example sentences together. It runs in any web browser, with nothing to install and no sign-ups.
Privacy
DubbleDef Kids has no accounts, no ads, no tracking and no sharing buttons. It doesn't ask for or collect any personal information. A player's progress and streak are saved only in their own browser, and nothing is sent to us.
For older players
Grown-ups and older students can play the original daily puzzle at dubbledef.com. DubbleDef is made by one person and is free to play. If you find it worthwhile, you can support DubbleDef.
